Today was an interesting day in the studio! At my lecture/session on Tuesday, my mentor was reminded of a ten hour recording session today starting at 11AM. We agreed to meet up a little before hand so that he could show my the patchbay in Studio A since it was being used Tuesday. I arrived at the studio at 11AM but I guess his studio session wasn't really until 1PM.No big deal, I got to read over and take notes on chapter five (yay microphones!).
Once Brad and the artist arrive and go over what the plans were for the day, Brad finds out that it was actually a producing session which wasn't noted since he didn't make the booking, therefore he didn't have all his gear. Even if he did, it's not like he had a production meeting or any reference prior to find out the direction of the sound the artist wanted to go in. Luckily, the artist was prepared and had brought some track samples and had a few of the songs already written. Brad had him pick one of his samples that had a same tempo of one of his songs, then set out a simple drum and snare beat so the artist could lay down a rough vocal recording to give Brad some material to work with so he could get writing on the music.
The situation ended up working out really well. It was a great learning experience for me for a few reasons. First, it gave me of what a production meeting looks like (on a small scale). I also got to see how to work with an artist when the session doesn't go as planned. Of course, the artist was a little bummed because he was pretty pumped to get started on his new album but he took it in stride. Him and Brad came up with a solid plan and a great platform for their new project. I hope to be in on their future sessions!
That's it for now, cheers!
