Chapter Five: Mics, Mics, and More Microphones! Posted on 2015-08-24 by Evangeline Greenko

Learning about microphones was pretty sweet. Now I know why people still tap the microphone to see if it's still on. Not that they need to, we have surely progressed since the carbon microphone. Another interesting thing was to see how some microhpones developed and how some stayed the same. I was watching a show where someone was using a Shure SM 57 and I [excitedly] pointed it out. It's an acoomplishing feeling being able to apply what I'm learning into more daily actions. My goal this week is to record a few different talk-shows and  name the microphones that they are using.

I got to sit on two sessions this week, one was a vocal recording (where we used a Neumann TLM 103 mic) and the other was a MIDI production session. At the start of the MIDI session, I had learned that the producer had lost all of his previous work due to a malfunctioned hard drive AND the backup malfuntioned as well. Luckily, he had CD copies of all his previous work so he could build off that. The only downside was that if he didn't like anything from the originals, he was stuck with it and couldn't change anything. The only option was to add to it. This was a huge lesson to save on multiple hard drives and to keep my hard drives updated (changed out about every year and a half).

During the session, the producter had a sound that he wanted to record off of his keyboard instead of one that we had on ProTools. I finally got to see a DI Box in use!

I really enjoyed the MIDI session. It really inspired me to get a keyboard of my own and take some piano lessons again. I've made a couple beats using GarageBand but I want a broader spectrum of sounds to use.

Something that I started doing this week (because of having to remember the different microphone styles) was make online flashcards, in addition to my handwritten notes and flashcards. This gave me the ability to post a picture on one side and the description through the other. The great thing is, you can make different sets of flashcards so I made one of just the microphones and then I made one with all the general chapter information. I can't wait to go back and add the first four chapters. The site also has a couple great features including memorizing, testing, and games to test your knowledge. You can check out my flashcards here: http://www.cram.com/user/evanjahlynn - I'm hoping that some of my fellow students will find the flashcards as useful as I did!

The next chapter seems short but after skimming through it, it is going to be A LOT of memorization. There are so many different miking techniques and instruments that need special miking needs. Better get on it! Until next time...

Cheers!
