Chapter Nine: ProTool Basics Posted on 2015-10-07 by Evangeline Greenko

Having ProTools up and running has definitely gotten me more excited about the program. I thought this day would never come! What a detailed and complex system... Down the most minute detail! There are so many options, settings, and variables that you need to consider in order to make sure that your system is optimizing at its fullest potential. For instance, it is better it lower the Hardware Buffer Size while recording to reduce latency and then increase it while mixing so that you can run more plugins. Latency is no bueno! We actually experienced this in my last studio session.

The [returning] artist came in and wanted to add some small ad-libs to a track that he had worked on with Brad a while ago. Since Brad thought that they were finished, he had increased the sample rate to 88.2kH as well as the H/W Buffer size during the mixing process. When the artist, Kaydee, went into the sound booth to start recording, he noticed that there was a delay in his headphones. This was latency. Brad ended up having to reduce the sample rate down to 44.1kH and decrease the H/W Buffer Size in order for the latency to decrease.

I'm excited to get working on this sine wave assisgnment so until next time...

Cheers!
