This week I finished my 7th session with my mentor covering Chapter 5- Microphones. Along with the course material, my mentor has had me working on a music project to further my understanding of the work that goes into engineering audio and creating a song. This work has included being able to break down a song and identifying all the instruments being used as well as relating the it all to the the material we've covered. This approach has allowed me to get behind the boards, so to speak, and work hands on with the equipment and software in the studio. As far as the material in chapter 5, I was able to see the many different mics that a professional studio has and why such a large selection is beneficial. For example, I was able to see how a drum set was set up and the different mics used to record it. My mentor also explained why he mic'd up the other instruments and their location within the room. Learing about all the different mics and their use in the studio is definitely some must know information. I definitely will look to increase my own selection of mics.
