7th Blog entry (Chapter 7&8 sessions) Posted on 2015-05-09 by Christopher Red

This is my blog entry for my last two studio sessions with my mentor Dick Orr at John Wagner Studios covering chapters 7 and 8. Both of these chapters were pretty straight foward in describing the importance of being prepared before recording sessions with clients. However, my mentor Dick Orr always provides so much more depth and detail on these concepts based on his own experiences working with a variety of clients. When explaining the material in chapter 7 on tracking, Dick  shared his experience in which one time he forgot to properly check the inputs of the mics which were setup to record the guitar portion of a song. After the session was finished and the band had went home for the night, he realized he had no guitar parts for the song. So he eventually had to have the guitar players come back in and re-record their parts. He told me how important it was to plan, check and then double check to make sure everything is working properly. The subject of being prepared included which mics to use as well as having as much info on the client as possible. As far as chapter 8 intro to pro tools, Dick really delved into the history, particularly what was going on in the audio industry as a whole when pro tools was introduced. I found it incredibly interesting learning how far the industry has come in a relatively short period of time. Its amazing how fortunate the engineers coming up today are in terms of the equipment capabilities and user friendly platforms. Dick also made it clear how all this technology makes it so that pretty much anybody can buy software and record and how important it is to learn as much as possible to seperate yourself and stand out from all the others. Knowledge really is power if you want to make a legitiment living in this business.
