Who knew that recording two high school boys would be so extensive, yet so short and easy like it was a Sunday afternoon? Here's the process in a nutshell:
- Listened to the song to get a feel for the style - very simple song, one you'd hear in a cafe of some sort.
- Set up the mics - SO MANY WIRES!!!!
- Recorded the acoustic guitar part first, using 3 different guitars to get that nice resonating rich timbre
- Recording the bass part took some time. Andy wanted to add some embellishments to excite the chorus and compliment the guitar, yet keep it simple. The bassist had to practice it a few times.
- Recording the percussion was probably the most extensive: we recorded them beating a simple rhythm on the backs of guitars (Andy duplicated it 6 times to make it sound like there were a number of people playing the beat), then used a sand shaker, a metal bead shaker, and finally Andy decided to add some soft cymbals played with bristle sticks and I RECORDED THAT TRACK! YAY ME!!!!!
- Finally, recorded the vocals with Andy recording the track multiple times, then finding and fitting in the best parts within each other to make one amazing vocal line where the singer sounds good throughout the whole track. (This guy's got a very unique voice)
- Then bounced track and put mics away, all this taking around 3 and a half hrs!
I didn't think it'd take that little time to record one song! And I was amazed at how quickly Andy worked! On top of that, we all got some coffee and ate delicious hummus and crackers. Talk about a pretty chill recording session. Andy pretty much explains that making tracks is like building with legos, one block on top of another...IT'S GREAT!!! Can't wait for Thursday to come!!!
