Surround Sound.

In a 5.1 surround sound system, there are 6 speakers used.  The center channel, left and right speakers.  Then the left and right surround speakers, plus the LFE channel. (bass).  Surround sound is heard by the listener from a 360 degree axis, instead of only from the front.  This gives the listener the illusion that they have become "part" of the sound experience.

Surround Sound is standard in most movies these days, and is now even being offered for television programs.

Remember that the cd sampling rate is 44.1khz and that there 2 billion pits on a 74 minute CD.  In cd production you can either use 2 methods. The first is replication which use a hydraulic press and the other is by duplication or burning.

Final mixes can be master to 16-24 bit DAT, 1/4 inch reel to real. CD-R or data files, tape or direct to the cpu.  It also important to order art proofs and test pressings before ordering the copies of the final mastering to be printed.
