Microphones - Recording Connection Week 5 Progress Posted on 2015-12-31 by Matt Harvey

This week's lesson was about an important tool that we use not in only in recording studios, but in many other elements in our lives, microphones! This lesson began with a small look into the history of microphones. Honestly, an entire in-depth course could be taught about the history of microphones! There are many makes of microphones. Different brands and designs of mics have their own signature sound. Other than practicality reasons, there are no exact rules when it comes to deciding which microphone to use in a given situation. For example, if you are recording a kick drum, you're going to want to use a microphone that is designed to better pick up kick drum frequencies. Another way of deciding a on a mic to use is having a certain sound that you want to achieve in mind. The material this week included a section on different microphones by different companies. With each different mic build, sound clips were included to show how that microphone sounded and performed. After making 100% on this week's quiz, it was time to get back into the studio with Boo!

Back in studio this week, Boo and I continued work on some projects for his client. First, we worked on the drum track that we recorded last week. We edited out some mistakes that were recorded. We did this by piecing together takes from different takes that the drummer recorded. Between Boo and I, we knocked this out in no time at all! That track is much closer to being a finished product now! His client also wanted some electric guitar "power chords" laid down on one of her tracks. So we went into the recording booth and set up one of Boo's favorite sounding Fender amps and ran a mic line into the patch bay to run through the Tascam and into the computer. I was in the ''hot seat" once again while Boo laid down the guitar tracks! Once the electric guitar tracks were finished. that was it for my time in the studio for the day. Boo uses the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) Cubase to produce his works. I've been using FL Studio for 5 years. There was not much of a learning curve between the two. The difference between the two is similar to driving two different vehicles. They both do the same task, they just look and run in different ways. I'm enjoying learning so many different things with the Recording Connection program!
