Plugins, Newsletter Feature, Continuing Learning with Pro Tools, and Thieves! - Recording Connection Week 10 Progress Posted on 2016-02-08 by Matt Harvey

This week of learning was, indeed, a full one! The very first thing that happened this week is something that I have known about for almost 3 weeks and have kept it under the hat until it was ready to be announced. Early in January, I was contacted by one of the writers of the Recording Connection weekly newsletter, Liya Swift. She said that they are enjoying my in depth blog posts and wanted a photo of me and Boo to feature in the weekly newsletter! I have been checking the newsletter every Monday to see if Boo and I were featured. On Monday February 1st, I found under the Apprentuces in Action section, me and Boo! The material for chapter 10 was on different plugins, additions to software to unlock more operating capabilities. I've been working with plugins now for 5 years on my own, so I had no problem with the material this week. Also in the week's work, there is an assignment from Recording Connection to create a simple 30-60 second song by using only a single cycle 1k sine wave and the plugins inside of Pro Tools. I am still working on mine, but the process involves lots of rendering and switching between the different AudioSuite plugins to make different track parts. This sine wave track will be posted as soon as it's finished! After making nailing another quiz, it was time to go back to Boo at his wonderful Knothole Recording Studio!

This week in the studio, Boo had a band come in and begin recording work on their new album Province of Thieves! The Thieves are a folk/rock kind of band that I normally don't listen to, but hearing what they have to release, I really like what they do! I can't wait for their album to be finished! I like their sound, the lyrics they write, and the great vocals that they possess! There were many different parts recorded on their different tracks ready when I arrived for my allotted time. One of their guys came in and recorded mandolin and acoustic guitar parts. We went over by several hours on this learning session, but I am not complaining! I was invited back on Friday and Saturday for more time in the studio sessions with Boo and Province of Thieves! On Friday and Saturday, I learned about how to run sessions with a band. What we worked on in those two days was adding guitar parts and vocals to tracks. I'm glad that I have a better insight on how Boo runs his sessions. I'm very thankful for the opportunity of getting in the studio with Boo and Recording Connection, and getting to learn the craft that I am continuing to pursue in life!
