David LuisChicago Recording Connection

Week 2 12/8/14 - 12/15/14 Posted on 2014-12-16 by David Luis

Intro to Electronics

This chapter starts off with a refresher course of high school chemistry. It talks about the characteristics of an atom, and the process of free-flowing electrons, know as electricity. I like the fact that this week on my “studio day” Joe was able to tie in what was said in the chapter to the real world. I helped set up a recording session for a live band, both mics and soundboard wiring. I can honestly say I had no idea how much the recorded-sound has to travel just to be visible on Pro-Tools. Not to mention all the precautionary devices that help make for a richer sound such as the surge protector. It was incredible to learn that perhaps the cheapest piece of equipment on the sound shelf is usually considered the most important. It keeps everything balanced and blocks incoming interference.

With every week I get more excited to go to school. I tried the traditional route for a few years but fell on and off during that time. When I made the decision to commit to the recording connection I knew my passion would hold through the journey. Today I’m lucky enough to be also working in a place where passing this course can lead to a career. It’s hard to see people working or studying for something they’re not truly passionate about. Fortunately for me, I’m blessed with more promising opportunities.
