Lesson 4 Microphones
Today's lesson was all about mics and varying types of mics. From the reading, I had a good foundation of what Andy would be discussing during lecture. The highlights of this lesson are the following; dynamic mics (dynamic and ribbons) and condensor mics, what phantom power is, the different polar responses, sub-categories of mic types (i.e. tube mics), some guidelines about mic selection like using dynamics for loud sources and condensors for more detailed sources, the inner workings of a diaphragm and how its movement is transduced into electricity, switches on dual capsule microphones, how to set up for stereo and how to set up using a blum line.
Although we didn't have a chance to set up and try out the different mics in this lesson, Andy assured me that after my patch bay lesson we could start plugging mics in. The biggest piece of advice I took from this lesson is that microphone selection varies. There is no one way to choose a mic. Certain artists and engineers have preferences to what they might want their sound to feel like, however; through practice and experimentation one can develop a preference with specific mics.
