Lesson #2
I had another great lesson in the studio, the lesson covered studio design and monitors and how to get a great sounding room. I learned about the thought that is put into designing, constructing, and choosing materials for a studio. I learned how good studio monitors are crucial to hear accurately to make decisions properly. Miller Street studio uses Yamaha brand nearfield monitors. I learned about the construction of the control room at the studio and the materials used such as the absorptive wall covering, sound diffusers along the walls, and how the angles of the room corners were designed to prevent standing waves. I also learned how crossovers control which signal is being applied to a specific speaker.
I am excited about everything I am learning and look forward to the real life application aspect. My mentor explains everything thoroughly and leaves none of my questions unanswered. As we discussed control room design and construction he used the studio’s control room as an example which helped me see the material’s real world application.
I am looking forward to the lesson on signal flow and patch bays. I hope the lesson can provide me with an extensive understanding of this area. My mentor, Joe Gallagher, offered to let me sit on sessions and I am hoping to do that very very soon. I would love to see how things are done at the Miller Street Studio and learn the procedure that is followed. It would be a great opportunity to watch how Joe interacts with clients and to observe his work ethic. I am excited to spend time at the studio outside of class, and look forward to the next lesson.
