MIDI is an acronym for = Musical Instrument Digital Interface

A working version of midi protocol was presented by Dave Smith and Chet Wood at the 1981 AES Convention.

Velocity= Force by which a given note is struck

A method of control for electronic instruments which predates MIDI?? Control Voltage.

A typical MIDI signal contains = Note Start/Stop, Note Number, Velocity.

Polyphony= refers to ability to play more than 1 note at a time!

What type of MIDI track do we create to start recording immediately with a SOFTWARE synthesizer(virtual instrument)? Instrument Track

Moving MIDI notes vertically in the MIDI Editor alters what? Notes values and Pitches.

What options do we have for reducing the 'robotic' feel of quantized MIDI recordings? Options for Reducing = Quantice Amount, Velocity, Swing.

In Structure free, what is an easy way to create a patchfrom any existing audio? Dragging Audio from edit window

What synth parameters might we adjust over time, to make our MIDI recordings more interesting? Attack and release, filter cutoff frequency, and volume and panning?

Midi clips DO NOT contain audio. … false

3 Built in software instruments included with pro tools = Structure, Xpand, Boom.

Which two synthesizers were involved at the first public MIDI connection at the 1983 Winter NAMM show? Sequential Circuits Prophet 600 & Roland Jupiter 6.

MIDI’s creative applications might include:

Using one keyboard to simultaneously control several sound sources

Creating a piece of music to simulate a full orchestra

Having your drummer’s tempo control the motion of the stage lights for your band’s performance

What type of track do we create to insert a software synthesizer (virtual instrument)? Instrument track

Where are software instruments assigned in the Mix window of Pro Tools? Under the name of the track, In the inserts section for that track, On the appropriate track type

Prior to capturing a MIDI performance, what must be checked in the Options menu? MIDI Thru

Moving MIDI notes vertically in the MIDI Editor alters what? Notes values and/or pitches

What options do we have for reducing the ‘robotic’ feel of quantized MIDI recordings? Quantize Amount, Velocity, and Swing

What is the go-to drum machine/programmer included in Pro Tools? Boom

In XPand, what does a patch consist of?  Volume, Pan, and Effects

Within structure, where does one change the octave of a given instrument? Within the general settings for the selected patch
