More Good Things Happening Posted on 2015-02-08 by David Green III

I am late posting my blog this week because I have been extremely busy with studying and rehearsing. Over the past week I’ve learned about wires like XLR, or RCA cables, balanced cables and etc. Also I’ve learned about Window media Audio, and OMG’s, which stands for Open Magic Gate, and a bunch of other stuff. I have to admit some of this is still a little confusing, but I’m getting better with understanding what these things each time that I go into the studio.  On Tuesday I went to the studio and learned a lot of new stuff including Reverbs, Reverb Machines and seeing what they did.  This made it simpler for me how understand how to make someone’s voice echo and that’s one of things I love about recording.  There is so much you can do to enhance the quality of the music or the vocals.  There is always something new to experience each time I go to the studio.

On Wednesdays, I usually go to the studio to observe what goes on during actual recordings.  Seeing how he worked with other students, I started to understand the instructor’s method of teaching.  At any given time, he may ask one of the students to grab a sheet of paper and explain “signal flow” in writing.  This way, he can be sure each of us knows what we are doing and where we may need help.  Needless to say, I am really enjoying this course so far.  My grades on the curriculum have been high and I hope to maintain the same average throughout.

One of the best things about being a part of RRF is the opportunity to hang out with others who love the same thing that you do.  It’s nothing for one of the students to ask them to show them what you can do.  When asked I played several selections on the piano and sang along several weeks ago.  To my amazement, one of the students approached me to see if I would be interested in being involved with a project he was working on for a client who played a lot of instruments but may need a pianist.  It feels good to actually be in the environment where all types of music is performed, recorded, mixed and mastered to perfection.

On another note, I continue to take vocal lessons once a week to strengthen my vocal chords.  I believe the continued training will help me to reach ranges I didn’t know were possible.  I was a bit surprised on Friday when the instructor asked if I would be willing to sing at a Black History recital she had planned for later this month.  As I said earlier, it has been a busy week.  Looking forward to more good things to come.
