Well, I have reached the end of the program. Last week was technically my final day but with a, (excuse my language) bad ass mentor like mine, I came back in today for some more work that is off of the curriculum! There's not much to discuss on what lesson 20 was about other than what it is, the final and the upload of the final mix. I chose this Indie Rock song by Fergessen called "Back From the Start" as my final mix to upload. About every single week I talk about how this mix is the best I've done so far and then come out with a different one every time. If I was to go back from the first time I ever mixed a song, to the songs I worked on during the program, this one is my favorite of all. This time I'm not just speaking about the EQ and compression that was put into it, but the emotion created. This vibe was accomplished by putting real emotions into my work. Which I think that is KEY when it comes to mixing a song. I believe that as an audio engineer not only do you make the QUALITY of the song better, but connecting the music, the band, and consumer together, is what seperates a good engineer from a GREAT engineer. However, with all of this being said, I uploaded my final mix with it being mastered by myself for the very first time. I have adjusted some dynamics on the mix itself and remastered it again and I will say that this one is solid and I will be posting it on my soundcloud I just created that you will all be able to listen to and leave your personal feedback!
I can't express on how grateful and thankful I am for learning and working with my mentor, Jim Pavett. His work is phenomenal, his knowledge is extraordinary, and most of all his teachings are very well driven! From when I first met him to now, he's ALWAYS set me up for success. Like today, he could've gone his way and parted since last week was my final lesson, but he allowed me to come back in and speak about my near future plans and had a microphone shootout. I brought my $70 mic, Sterling Audio ST51 and did an A-B comparison with his vintage Neumann U67, Mojave MA-200, and his Audix SCX25-A. Of course I was never thinking that this could even be compared to any of these. What I learned on this shootout is, just because a microphone is a Neumann, or any other name brands, it is not the best microphone you should have. When it comes to buying a mic and comparing them, there will be subtle differences in each that make one better than the other. For instance, the Mojave MA-200 (tube mic) had a brighter, more present, and rich sound, as to where the Neuman U67 (tube mic) was a little less present and not as bright as the MA-200. The subtle difference I had compared to those 2 were that of course MA-200 was the brightest, and mine had a little more edge to it. Overall my mic was not horrible at all, however I will be getting that MA-200 when I have the money! Great thing is my mentor is a dealer for pro audio equipment www.purewaveaudio.com I'm definitely coming to him for equipment and to keep in touch ! Thank you Jim and thank you Recording Connection! Best decision I have made! Glad I didn't go to CRAS like I almost did until I got accepted here!
