Finally in the mix Posted on 2017-04-13 by Jennifer Horn (Vilburn)

I'm a bit behind on my blogs so let me catch you up to date.

I've recently started my lessons for live sound with Kyle Dickey through Colorado Sound Studios,. My first day with him was spent preparing for a the Easton Corbin band at the Grizzly Rose. We did load-in, set-up and sound check. I did most of the mic set up and I was able to observe the mixing for the opening band. Easton Corbin brought their own engineer and I was able to briefly speak with him about his path in this profession.

Overall it was an awesome first day!

The following week was a busy one. We participated in an event called Keggs and Eggs at Blake Street Tavern in Denver. The artists performing were Bishop Briggs, American Authors and Bryce Fox. The first day was spent loading in all the equipment for the concert. Day 2 we spent wiring and final load-in as well as sound check and mapping. I was able to really see what a difference the shape of a room makes. Day of show was hectic, I got to observe the monitor tech and learn a bit about EQ. I also helped load off and set up between bands. At the end of the day we loaded all the equipment back onto the trucks called the event a success.

It was a bit trial by fire but I loved every minute of it.

This past Saturday I was back at the Grizzly Rose for a house band. Again, I set up all the mics and observed the FOH mixer. Although this time I got much more practice picking out frequencies that were interferring or muddying up the mix. We spent a good amount of time discussing EQ. Its finally starting to come together.
