Lesson 2- 1/15/13 Posted on 2013-01-20 by Ryan Catlett

Time In: 1700

Time Out: 1930

In this lesson we focused on acoustics and the sound of a room.  We concentrated more on the acoustics of a working studio, and not so much on building a studio from the ground up.  We covered the primary factors that govern room acoustics, the difference between different materials absorb and/or reflect sound, and how the size of a recording room will effect the sound on the recording.  Jesse also covered the importance of reverberation and how it is applied to a track to give the track depth and distance.

The second half of the lesson we focused on visualizing sound.  The Genelec monitors that Colorado Sound has are second to none if you want to get a finely tuned visual representation of sound.  Jesse showed me how different sound is when it is recorded in mono and stereo, and he ran some sample tracks for me to really understand the difference.  He also wanted me to really understand the effects of reverb.  He ran a mix through the Euphonix console on a loop, and let me run free adjusting the mix and really hearing how far or near reverb can make a track sound.  Having the mix on a loop made me realize for the first time that the more one hears a track or a mix, the more one starts to hear the different tracks more individually and seperate from the mix as a whole.  Getting some hands one experience on the board was a great lesson and I feel that my ear is better tuned to hear sound better and more individually after getting the visual representation that Jesse explained.  Great lesson and a lot of fun.
