Lesson 2
Missed week two because my mentor was ill so we did Lesson 2 the following week.
The lesson for this week covered complete studio design ranging from outside noise isolation to studio and control room separation and monitoring techniques. I learned about the different diffusers and traps used in the studio. I was a little curious about each different diffuser and how they dispersed or absorbed the sound at Dub Media. Karl was very helpful in describing why they did what they did and that the best way to use them is by hearing how each one affects the sound in the control room and studio,
After going over the lesson, we had some extra time to play on the console and with the studio. Karl had me setup a new session and record him playing an acoustic guitar. We used an Avalon pre-amp and another that unfortunately I can't remember the name of. He assisted me carefully while I setup up 3 different mics to get the recording: a TLM-103 and 2 Rode condenser mics. It was really cool to get a little time on the board and actually get some time doing some recording.
I think a huge strength is my background in recording and understanding signal flow and electronics. It's definitely giving me an opportunity to delve in a little deeper into the logistics of Dub Media more so than the actual lessons, with the approval and guidance of Karl of course.
