Sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll....or rather, these days the sex part seems to have calmed down and maybe now it should be-alcohol, drugs, and rock'n'roll....In either case, three things that are synonymous with each other, but why? Was it ever really a good idea to associate these things with each other? Does this still hold true today? In this technological age of smartphones, and applications at your fingertips that will help you diagnose a medical problem or tell you the saturated fat content of the burger you're currently eating, the general population seems to be drifting towards supporting a healthier lifestyle while many musicians seem to be stuck in this out-dated, "rockstar" stereotype. Granted some people live their whole life indulging greatly and never succomb to an early death because of it but there have also been MANY, MANY great, amazing musicians that we lost much too early because of their over-indulgent lifestyles. This is not meant to be an attack on anyone who does participate in these activities it's merely meant to be a look at why it is that we still do this and the separation it creates between musicians. Myself being a health nut and a musician, I sometimes find it hard to fit into certain crowds of musicians because I don't indulge in drugs and I drink very little alcohol. It's almost as if there should be 'parties' in the music world like there are in politics-those that support the new lifestyle and those that support the 'traditional' lifestyle. Will we, as musicians, ever get past this? Will there be a day when we can all support the healthy lifestyle we all deserve and still rock it out on-stage? Or will these labels forever stay with the rock musician till the end of time? Only time will tell....
Till next time-
