Alan HolmesEdmonton Recording Connection

Satan may not have much to do with Lesson 6, but I'd be lying if it wasn't frustrating. Although I wouldn't say I tanked the quiz, this is definitely the worst that I've done in the program thus far. Now, it may not be all about the numbers but it's still irritating since I had a successful track record running for me. And I'm still somewhat miffed as to what went wrong. As much as I'd like to blame it on the illness pervading my body or the numerous medications fighting said illness, this is the first time that some of the concepts were confusing without much resolution. For instance, on the little "test-your-knowledge" quizzes spliced throughout the chapter, I did perfectly fine. Come the big quiz, what I apparently thought I knew what I was talking about went a little downhill. Part of what makes this frustrating is that I've worked with many of these positons before. As with Chapter 5, when recording with Something Mechanical, we'd set up various mics, in correspondance with the drums, the guitar amps, the vocals.

Sure, in theory a lot of the positons make sense. But it's another ball game putting them to practice. With that being said, I absolutely love being in the studio because I get to actually do things. And it makes the nonsensical mumbo-jumbo of theory make sense because I can see it and actually interact with it. That's not a criticsm of the program mind you, but rather how my mind has always tended to work. Seeing and doing just makes things click. And that has never been more true with this chapter. Accent microphone placement in particular; may as well have been German on paper. But working in the studio I actually got to see it and use it. And a whole new world had opened. Praise actually doing things.
