Alan HolmesEdmonton Recording Connection

Before Pro Tools Posted on 2014-12-03 by Alan Holmes

Week eight has come and gone. Admittedly not the most remarkable of the chapters, 8 served as an introduction to Pro Tools. Mainly navigating your (in this case "my") system to ensure that it has the appropriate specifications for Pro Tools. And thank the stars mine does! I was never particularly worried but alls well that ends well. The short keys will take some getting used to. Lots of memorization to be done there. But a speedier process is certainly nothing to sniff at, especially when time is in short supply.

In studio this week, harkened back to Chapter 7, which I unfortunately was alienated from due to illness. So, to compensate I'd completed an additional assignment of creating a plot map in the Two Bodies of Water Studio, placing a hypothetical band and their instruments into the setting without using overdubs and recording live. We went over that assignment this week with some results that quite surprised me. Mainly, the use of putting guitar amps into different rooms. I was surprised at putting the guitar amp into the vocal booth. I'd assumed under the circumstances, to have all instruments and amps in the same room. But having the amp (and a microphone for it) in an isolated booth, helps to record the crisp sound while not interferring with the singers vocal mics. Creative solutions; gotta love it.

And now Pro Tools is in the mail. The fun is soon to begin.
