One trend I've noticed, is that there is a definite sound to some producers' work. Anybody who's ever glanced at a plugin bundle, will notice there are signature pieces of technology, to recreate the audio treatments other professionals apply. This is thanks to the habitual patterns of their process; it becomes a trade secret. Much like a chef working with the same ingredients as the rest, it is the ability to discern the differentiation in quality, that will ultimately influence the end result. I have seen this firsthand with my mentor. He often shares his plugin comparisons, and reasoning behind why one may be a choice utility over another, and might be best suited (based on the Pro Tools version).
During a newer session, after a successful rough mix, he explained to me how his mentor had shown him how to mix drums. There was a clear before and after, that he demonstrated. It was an important moment, because I knew he was passing on a key part of his studies; helping me to avoid those same pitfalls. That time saving information allows me to see what we do from another angle, a sort of counterintuitive perspective.
