This week was focused on mix theory and an intro to mastering. Overall, the material covered in Chapter 12 wasn't difficult to understand, so I didn't have too many questions about this chapter for my mentor. I started my rough mix assignment, using "The Siege" file by The Bella Donna Treatment and feel like I have a decent mix so far. I created a group for vocals, a group for guitars, a group for drums, but left the harmonica and bass guitar alone. I kept it relatively simple as far as the panning goes, and just tried to keep the stereo image spread out enough to hear all the components of the mix. I'm really looking forward to adding some effects and really bringing out the best that I can from this track.
During my time at the studio, I shadowed Luis during a recording session with a local Hip Hop artist named FONK House. I mostly just observed the recording process and tested myself by going over what key commands Luis was using to do certain tasks. I also tried to follow along with his technique of adjusting compressors or other effects until the sound was on point with what he and the artist were going for. I did have the opportunity to make some minor microphone stand adjustments and even bounce some files to CD for FONK House. Luis had to set up studio C for the oncoming client, so he asked me to bounce the six files from the session they just recorded in Studio A. It was a good experience that helped reinforce familiarity with Pro Tools and gave me a sense of accomplishment.
