This week was my first week back after having to put my apprenticeship on hold due to work required travel. I picked up where I left off on Chapter 14, which delt with dynamic signal processing. During the chapter review with my mentor at Audio Mix House, we went over the different types of analog compressors and digital compressors. To be specific we went over the 1176LN (analog version), and then the plug in compressors available in Pro Tools, such as the R com, multi band compressor and CLA-3A, and a 2500 API compressor. We listened to a section of vocals uncompressed, then listened to that same vocal sample with a different compressor and noted the differences between each one. Some of the differences between the compressors were subtle, but there was enough of a difference between them to understand how each compressor adds its own characteristic to the sound. After that, we talked about how and when you would use an expander, a limiter, a gate, and a de-esser. Overall, it was a good restart to my apprenticeship program.
