Chapter 15 Posted on 2015-11-04 by Javier Melendez

This week was focused on time based effects such as delays, reverb, flange and phaser. During the review day at Audio Mix House, Luis and I went over the chapter quiz and talked about the differences between each time based effect. We started off discussing the differences between the types of reverb and I even had a chance to get a close look at an outboard plate reverb unit, the EMT 250, which they use at Audio Mix House when they're going for a certain sound. After that, we went over a few examples of reverb plug ins available on Pro Tools and then talked about how I could apply some reverb to my ongoing mix assignment. With some pointers and wise words of advice from Luis, I added some reverb to the vocals on the track and also to the acoustic guitar. They were subtle additions, but I feel that it added some presence to the vocals and acoustic guitar. After spending some time on adding reverb to my mix assignment and making a few other small adjustments to the mix, Luis played a song he had been working on recently. He talked me through the process of how he created certain sounds, the types of plug ins and effects he added, and also showed me how to duplicate a lot of what he did. I was really impressed to learn he put this all together himself. The song was nothing short of professional work, and I'm looking forward to hearing the final product once he adds some vocals and mixes it all down.

The next day, I went into the studio to observe and help during a vocal recording session. Luis is good about setting up for the session and having things ready to go as soon as the client walks in, but I was able to help here and there with microphone height adjustments and things like that. I mostly spent my time visually following his work flow and trying to understand the reasoning behind it. For example, when Luis added an EQ to a track and adjusted certain frequencies, I would ask myself if I would've picked up on the fact that an adjustment in that range was needed. Also, I would confirm with Luis on what he was doing and why he did it to make sure I was on the right track. Overall, it was another good experience sitting in on that recording session. I'm finding it easier to understand what is going on and why certain changes are made when they are made.
