RRFC Advanced Audio Engineering Week 13 Mentor: Larry Goetz Studio: The Lair Posted on 2016-07-10 by Justin Smith

Week 13 was a busy week for me. I ran 4 sessions by myself. I feel I'm to the piont where I can pretty much run the sessions open to close. The first session was for an artist named Drew. He was doing 5 songs for a demo. I set up two U87s which I set to figure 8. One for the acoustic and one for the vocals. He said it was just for a demo which is why we set it up that way, but we then went back and recorded each one by itself. I then added a quick mix with Compression, Reverb and Autotune. He really liked the mix and said it came out way better than expected.

The other 3 days were for the same client. The same Producer who I worked for with Madchild had a young girl who he was helping develop. Shawn(the producer) and his friend Jordan bought out the studio for three days to do a writing session where they got two songs almost finished. I did all the tracking for the sessions and I set up different mics and arranged the song in Pro Tools. They started out each day with recording a guitar part DI. Then Jordan added production with Omnisphere. After we had the song arranged and all the parts marked I just looped each part so they could write to it. When they were done writing we tracked which took really long because the girl was young and did not have a lot of experience. It was good though for me because it helped me perfect my workflow when tracking and comping vocals. After tracking I flew the hook and bridges and we were done. they are gonig to add post production on their own time. I learned a lot this week and it went smooth so thats good.
