Week 15 - Subtractive Synthesis Posted on 2018-06-10 by Kyle Ellis

This week's chapter was a great overview of subtractive synthesis and helped me understand why synths are set up the way they are in Ableton as well as VST plugins.

As I conclude week 15, I am ready to post my next trap/rnb track to my soundcloud any day now. At this point I'm adjusting some minor tweaks to instruments and leveling to help them sit in the mix exactly how I want them. I have also started another rnb track with hints of melancholy, which is why the song really is interesting and unlike anything else I've heard. I am really hoping the vocalist I have intended for the song is inspired by it and instantly connects with it so she can write her vocals and lyrics.

Also since my last post, I have upgraded my home studio with better gear, which is sounding amazing thus far. I purchased the Apollo Twin from Universal Audio as well as Adam A7X's. I am very happy with my purchase, but am also wondering how the acoustics of my room are affecting what I hear. I may be purchasing SonarWorks' Reference 4 with the microphone soon. It's been hard for me to adjust my high end of the mix, like with hihats and sound effects, so I'm hoping the Reference 4 helps me correct my untuned room.

This week in the studio, an intern was running a session in Pro Tools and the client got upset and left the studio as "he was taking too long." I realized I need to also learn Pro Tools since it seems a lot of sessions are run out of it and I'd like to be able to help the studio when I can. Further, I was hoping that I'd already be familiar with Pro Tools by now as my goal was to have multiple songs recorded with vocalists by now, but it was harder than expected to find genuine artists ready and willing to record.

The hunt continues...

This week's chapter was on mixing 101, which was a great review for what I've learned in the studio. The tips about what compression settings to use (generally) depending on the type of instrument (drums, vocals, etc... Read More >>
