Yesterday I had a lesson with Andrew. I thought it would be helpful to show him a song that I had produced, and after listening through we went over different aspects of production and engineering that could be improved upon. We spent a lot of time going over compressors and EQ, which was helpful because I've been using those tools strictly through trial and error without any idea of general rules. I learned that often producers double a vocal track, then strongly compress one and only slightly compress the other, resulting in a vocal line with plenty of room for dynamics but without the risk of being too loud in places. Andrew uses a plugin called Nectar which has great features for vocals, among them reverb, delay and compressors, as well as special FX like pitch shifters. The possibilities are truly endless.
To the next!
