Not a whole lot happened for me in audio land for the last two weeks. I moved across town into a new house, and Greg was really busy, so we just didn't meet up until this week (last week as I write this). I finally got the new house squared away enough to set up my mix room on Saturday night, so I started the week by listening to my big monitors for the first time in two years. Yay!
On Tuesday, I attended a film screening at Scorpio Sound where Greg played the finished movie for the director and producers for the approval of the final audio mix. It is an indie horor film with a LOT of sound design. Greg says the set audio was really poor as well and required a lot of work to get right. He did all the audio in this project: dialogue, Foley, sound design, 5.1 mix, everything. The film was really quite good and I guess they have a string of appointments to show it to some major studios or distributors or something. It was super cool to sit in with all the top people on the production and hear the creative input, see the politics, and actually be a part of the discussion as well since I was the only person there who hadn't seen it before, and that was of particular interest to all involved. Afterward, Greg and I talked about what had gone on and he filled me in on some relevant back story and gave better context to a lot of the political stuff. He talked candidly about his negotiations with his contract and his difficulties with certain aspects. All in all, a very educational evening, and I even got to drive some fancy cars waaay out of my price range since I was attending under the pretence of being the valet/beverage wrangler.
Then on Thursday, I went to Scorpio again to get in a real lesson with Greg. We finished his tour through basic session import/export/workflow/etc. Since I have a pretty solid background in audio already, we charge through most of what he wants to show me and have plenty of time for fairly lengthy tangents into deeper technical stuff.
All is well; onward and upward.
