My First Day Posted on 2015-08-07 by Preston Emery

Whats up guys, so yesterday was my first day at Winterland Studios. My mentor was Josh Levi. The lesson was all about sound and hearing. I learned all about different wave lengths, the basic fundamentals of sound and how our ears persevie sound. I also learned about different frequencies and how different instruments can play the same note, but sound totally different which is known in the recording world as timbre. We also talked about sound behavior. As we were walking through the different rooms throughout the studio, the way our voices were reflecting off the walls was changing. I could hear the differences so clearly I couldn't believe it. After the lesson, Josh gave me an in depth tour of the whole studio, like studio A. Studio A is this large open room but also has three different side rooms with different sound qualities and $250,000 mixing board and every mic and set up you could possibly imagine. Studio B is a smaller one room studio which is where we had our lesson. Theres a kitchen, different bathrooms. two actual studios, two lounges, and a garage. Winterland Studios has actually had artists from all over the world come to the studio just to record with them. They've had some big name artists like Prince and R.Kelly just to name a couple. Since I'm an intern, I also have to do a bunch of grunt work like cleaning dishes and bathrooms which I really don't mind. I thought that the curriculum would be very stale and a little difficult to grasp, but its actually fun and I really like it. When you work with what you love, it doesn't feel like work at all.
