First session at Esplanade Studios! Posted on 2016-05-18 by Daniel Perez

Hi all,

Last weekend I had the pleassure of working along Misha Kachkachishvili, (owner and lead engineer at Esplanade Studios) and other staff, assisting on the recording of a local band called Trumpet Mafia. I was able to assist preparing the session for this amazing 10 piece band helping out with connections, labeling stands, solving minor balance/volume issues, as well as miking drums, Organ B3, Fender Rhodes, horn section consisting of five trumpets and more. Working in such a magnificent and professional environment was very satisfying; all members of the band and the studio were very open and kind, making the vibe of the studio as pleasent as it could be.

Also, had the opportunity to deal with very cool vintage gear such as: RCA-44, Coles and Royers ribbon condenser mics, (around 1940's equipment), an impecable Hammond B3, and an absolutely delightful two cabin Fender Rhodes, within many other awesome gear.

After my first session there I was very pleased I actually got to help practically with the setup and connections, (thinking I was there as an observer mainly), as it helped me understood a lot of basics I needed to review again, and also gain aknowledgement of loads of new tips to apply when recording at home, (obviously in a different application comparing both equipments).

The band's performance was impecable, (best local musicians in New Orleans). First day, (Sunday), we spent the morning setting up the gear, cables, and the studio overall, and after 2pm musicians started arriving and setting up their own gear. The band decided to focus on recording a few tracks they had rehearsed as well as a few more that were arranged on the day, ending with a couple of arranged jazz standard versions. Next day, (Monday), the band decided to record a huge jam rotating different musicians along the session. Three different drummers were used, two bass players, one percussionist, five trumpets, one guitar player, and three keys players. At the end of the session they had more than 5 hours of outstanding tracks ready to go! Trully recomend this band to everyone, absolutely stunning!

Well, here I have some pics I took of the session, not very good quality but at least is something.

Update soon, all the best to all.

Daniel.
