Clouds Over Terminus: Day 1 Posted on 2014-12-06 by Kristen Bonano

HOW COOL IS THIS PLACE?

I'm super grateful that I get to work in a place as awesome as Terminus Studios. Before I ramble, I'll just get down to business: the place is great. It's small, clean, and professional. Everyone who works there is super friendly and smart and loves to help out. Sax himself has awesome good vibes and having my 1-on-1 lesson with him was unreal. I mean that when I was in college I was the kid who sat in the back of the room, more content to teach myself rather than speak up and ask questions. With Sax I felt comfortable enough to ask about anything I was confused about, and he's a GREAT teacher on top of that. We got down to the basics and I learned what was important to know in my future line of work, so I can't wait to get started on that stuff.

I reverted back to my old ways of learning when I was sitting beside Danny Avila, who was the sound engineer for the day. I silently watched him work as he clicked away on his keyboard, controlling Pro Tools like a pro, for lack of a better word. That board was his best friend. He was pressing buttons and adjusting knobs all over the place and it was super inspiring to see someone at work like that.

I was lucky enough to sit in on a vocal session by Sharrief Thomas, who is signed uner AMG/Universal. First of all, woah. Second of all, I knew the process into how a record is made, but I never got to see it fron the other side of the glass. Sitting beside Danny and seeing how he messed around with Sharrief's individual vocal tracks and then put them all together to create this one big, interesting sound was amazing. Sharrief himself is really friendly and laid back, which I appreciated a lot.

And of course, the simple things are what matters most. Not thirty minutes into my first day and I'm being shown how to set up a microphone with the stands, pop filter, and correct cables. The other students are really cool and I can tell they're super smart and knew how to do everything themselves, and they're only in their third week.

Honestly I love it so far. I can't wait to go back tomorrow!!
