This week I had the opportunity to help set up for a small session up in the live room. We mic'd the grand piano and Mark explaind his technique for doing that. I set up a few vocal mics, two of which were tube mics which I've never handled before. I learned how to set up our hearback system and how the signal flow works in this particular studio. It was a good experience.
In my lesson Mark and I discussed sample rate, bit depth, and how the standard method for recording is the PCM method. We also had an interesting conversation about a demonstration he saw at a seminar he attended. The demonstration had to do with DSD recording and how music recorded using PCM affects the human body differently than music recorded using DSD.
Overall, I feel like I'm retaining the information I'm learning, I'm connecting with some of the interns, and engineers here and I'm enjoying this program.
