Plugins & Processing

A plugin is a softwar comonent used to add capabilities to a larger host software.

AAX (Avid Audio eXtension) - Buy AAX Plugins (Its that SIMPLE)

Native vs. DSP - the main difference between HD systems and non- HD systems is processing

LEGACY PLUGIN FORMATS

RTAS (Real Time AudioSuite) - Pro Tools 11 will NO LONGER support RTAS plugins.

Avid is switching over to the AAX format.

TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) - Pro Tools no longer comes with TDM or RTAS support

VST (Virtual Studio Technology) - The VST format has a secondary in the VSTi which is for digital instruments.

AU (Audio Units) - Apple has its own proprietary plugin format in their AU format. AU plugnis is very similar to VST plugins.
