First Post: Expectations Posted on 2012-03-29 by Ben Eklund

This being my first post, I suppose it’s best to let you know what to expect from my blog, in both a general sense as well as on more specific levels.  Above all else, I hope to learn something from every post.  Every student in Recording Connection is currently reading Modern Recording Techniques by David Huber.  The book is a great starting point for learning the ins and outs of modern recording and production techniques.  However, as Huber writes, this book should not be our only source of information.

While the book is beyond informative and helpful, we cannot understate the importance of pulling information and tips from other sources.  Since there is no one correct way to engineer and produce audio, we would be slighting ourselves by relying on only one source to learn how to do both.  Thousands of engineers and producers make a living using their own experiences, trials, and mistrials as guides toward becoming better at their professions.  They all have suggestions and tips about what techniques work better than others, and many have posted these on the internet, or have written books of their own.  My blog posts will contain some information that I cull from other sources in addition to Huber’s book, with the hopes of becoming a better engineer.  I hope others who read my blog will take something from each post as well.

Despite the reading I do, my posts will not be several paragraphs of detailed explanations on EQ, compression, using time-based effects, plug-ins, etc.  All of that can be found on entire websites dedicated to music production, and it would be literally pointless for me to just retype it all.  It would also be boring as hell for me and everyone else reading it.  Instead, I’ll write a few brief points I learned about a certain topic, including some tips from pro I came across.  I also want to make my blog have a “workshop” vibe, so I’ll be posting audio recordings and videos I make that demonstrate a point about the topic.  By doing this, I hope to create a more auditory and visual environment for those who read my blog.  I look forward to hearing from some other students, too!

I made a post a few months ago about the idea of building a subkick microphone.  I showed the post to my mentor, Joey Heier, at Crystal Clear Recording Studio in Philly, and played the audio as well... Read More >>
