Week 2 Posted on 2016-11-09 by Gino Benedetti

This week Joey and I talked about sample rate which basically is the how how many snapshots of the sine wave are taken within one second. The higher the sample rate the more accurate it is converted. We also talked about bit depth which is like the resolution. He explained what a bit is and what bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, and terabytes consist of. He told me about the evolution he went through from analog to digital and explained to me that when he first bought one gigabyte it cost seven thousand dollars. Now he can get two terabytes for sixty dollars on amazon which is plenty of space. We then talked about the importance of an external hardrive to save all of your work on because an internal hardrive can go at anytime and all of your work will be gone.

The next lesson with Joey we talked about cables. We talked about how to wrap up cable properly to be more efficient at gigs. We talked about a few different kinds of cables inlcuding XLR cables, instrument cables, and headphone cables. He explained to me unbalanced and balanced cables. Unbalanced cables such as a guitar cables don't have a ground and balanced cables such as headphone cables have a ground. We talked about male and female ends of XLR cables which are used for mics. All of these cables are low voltage. We also talked about USB 3.0 cords which can be used to plug a keyboard directly into protools and use protools software to change the sound of the keyboard. Then Joey let me play drums while he recorded and then he showed me a little of mixing to make them sound great.
