Week 4 Posted on 2016-12-20 by Gino Benedetti

In the studio this time we talked about different ways to utilize microphones. First we talked about close and distance miking which is pretty self explanatory. Close miking also takes away more room sound. In other words if you are closer to the sound source then less of the room sound will be present. We also talked about accent miking which for example is when you have an orchestra and say there is a flute solo well then that instrument needs to brought out with a mic. Lastly, we talked about ambient miking which is when the mic is placed in a spot to really capture the sound of the room. We also talked about some stereo miking techniques. First he told me that a spaced pair is basically any stereo miking. X-Y miking is when placing two mics at a 90 degree angle and what this does is picks the left mic will pick up the right side of the room and vice versa. We talked about decca tree miking which is used for orchestra's and it is prety simple, it includes three mics, one right, one center, and one left. This is used to pick up what the conductor hears. After we talked about miking and techniques I had the pleasure to see a band perform live on Joey's stage!

Next time I came to the studio I observed Joey mastering one of his client's music. He checked all of the levels to make sure there was headroom and he also checked the lows, mids, and highs to make sure everything was in order. He put something called virtual tape machine on the bass and it really gave the bass a warm feeling to it. The end result sounded great!
