When I came into the studio this time I had the pleasure of sitting and observing Joey record vocals. He used a tube preamp. Most of the time they were creating new takes if the vocalist was not happy with the first. Joey would delete the last take but the clip would be saved just to make sure if the client might want to use it. He labeled the takes. Eventually every part was put together and it sounded very fluent even though it consisted of different takes. He put a compressor on the vocals to balance the output of the vocals.
Then next time Joey was helping to mix some of his client's songs. I observed as they set levels of individual tracks. They brought the treble down a little and it made a huge difference. Then almost everything was blending well. They used a plugin called insight to really dial in the thump of the bass drum. They made a group of all the percussion so that they could solo it and make sure the cymbals werent to loud. Also the group alowed them to bring all of the faders down in that group and stay relative to eachother. Once the drums and leads were all set to appropriate levels the mix sounded great.
