Week 6 Posted on 2017-01-17 by Gino Benedetti

This week we started to talk about protools. He showed me the importance of matching up your inputs and outputs. Then we took a look athe processing power of my mac which isn't bad and this is good because now I know my mac should be fine with protools. Next he showed me some tools in protools that are commonly used such as the scrubber tool, which is almost like a little speaker that plays whatever you mouse over on the track. Also he showed me the grabber tool which is pretty self explanatory, it is used to grab and move tracks around. Then there is the trimmer tool which is used to trim tracks. Using smart tools you can use all of these tools at once making it very quick and easy. There is also a fade tool which can be used for example at the end of a song to fade out. We talked about some shortcuts included the very useful ones to zoom in or out. We talked about different modes like slip, or grid mode. Grid mode can move the track to a relative space like if we have a time signature the grid mode alows us to move it exactly to the next measure or middle or wherever is needed. speaking of time signatures we have different counters like we can have bars, or minutes and seconds. We covered the basics of protools and I feel like I still have so much to learn but I am ready to go.

Next time in the studio Joey recorded a couple of guys. First they recorded guitar parts. Joey set the tempo for the player and created the click track. He uses two mics to record the guitar. He pans hard left and right. Once the first guitar player was done the second comes in to record his guitar part. So in the end we have four guitar tracks and the result is a very full sound. Next it was time to record vocals. After that is done some eq is added including just a little autotune to correct some shaky pitch parts. Then reverb is added to give it a more spacey effect. After all of that a rough mix is put together.
