Hayden GoodzinskiPittsburgh Recording Connection

Slow but Still Working Posted on 2018-01-08 by Hayden Goodzinski

This last couple of weeks I got to experience working with two different bands. The first band was an old school metal band. I never got the name yet but instead of the whole band coming in to record, the leader of the group, Grub, decided to hire a professional musician to make the recording process quicker and smoother. The musician's name was Josh and man is he a talented musician. This guy could play anything. Josh is originally a country artist but he was able to play drums, rhythm/lead guitar, and bass for this band. The thing that amazed me the most about Josh was that everything he played was by ear. He had no written music. All he had was mp3 files of the songs the band recorded in a garage with very little recording materials. There were some minor changes to each song but what Josh and Doug have done so far, Grub was extremely impressed.

The other person that came in the last week was Doug's old guitar teacher. The music he wanted to record was more of a Led Zeplin/Lynard Skynard feel. So basically classic rock for those who do not know who Led Zeplin or Lynard Skynard are. The project we were working on Doug had already started a while ago. Sadly we were only able to get one song finished but we were able to record a very impressive bass track and 8 rhythm guitar tracks for this one song. I know what your thinking. Yes, if you put 8 guitar tracks on top of each other it all sounds the same but louder. The thing is, each guitar track had a different sound effect to the track. We used a system called an 11 Rack that allows guitarists to use a large amount of sound effects to their instruments on the computer without having to use a pedal board. The guitar just plugs into the 11 Rack which then is plugged into the computer that allows Doug to change the sound effect the musician wants on his or her guitar while providing the good sound quality to the track.

There's so much more that I will be learning in the next 16 weeks and I'm always looking forward to what I'm gonna be learning next. Although these next few weeks are going to be slower than usual, there is always still room to learn something new.
