Today I had the pleasure of listening to and co producing a jacked up track we received today. I have no idea what studio this guy went to or what the engineer was thinking. It was a hot mess. The tracks weren't labeled. There was no compression on any of the tracks so the dynamic range of the vocals was off. There was no reverb or delay. This was a rap song so ofcourse you add reverb and delay to the track. The vocals were too low and the instrumental was too high. And in parts of the chorus you could hear people talking in the background. Kind of on the low end. Like having a full blown conversation. I was surprised because I'm used to recording/mixing in a professional environment where everything is up to par and acceptable. What I received today was a hot mess.
But other than that, I learned a little bit more about a few of the effects like compression. How ratio effects the sound, and how attack/release are also important.
