Overdubs are one of the most important parts of getting the best version of a song recorded. Filling in the holes and weak spots left by a single instrument really adds depth and character to a song. I'm a metalhead, and overdubs are the most common tool used by metal musicians to get that "I'm ready to rock in a stadium" sound. In the early days, bands had one guitarist, a bassist, drummer, and vocalist. Maybe keys. However, as bands started evolving the sound, metal bands everywhere starting having a second guitarist on stage. This allowed for that full, record-produced sound in a live setting. They were already adding multiple guitar tracks in studio, and realized that they needed it live as well. Overdubbing really has a lasting effect on a song, album, and genre.
