As a vocalist, vocal overdubs are my life when in studio! Being able to layer my voice, harmonize, add depth, and even record bits at a time helps create the best vocal performance possible. A lot of bands use it as a way to get people more interested in a chorus, or as a way to fake auto-tune something. Before auto-tune, a lot of singers would layer multiple takes that were just slightly different to create a chorus effect, thus tricking the audience into hearing the correct note and melody. It's a trick I use at home as I don't have auto-tune or melodyne readily available.
