Mastering. This is where a song really comes into fruition. No matter how good a mix is, a final mastered version should always be better. A well mastered song should be consistent in terms of volume, but shouldn't be overly compressed as to kill pieces of the performance. A good mastering engineer should always try to keep the integrity of the mix in-tact, while bringing forth those pieces that get lost along the way.
