Week 2 With Joe Haze- Annex Posted on 2015-09-24 by Kenna Hansen

My second lesson was amazing! I learned lots! Joe always provides a very comfortable and non-intimidating environment in the studio.  It makes it a lot easier to learn from and feel an openness to ask questions no matter how stupid I feel mine are at times.  I really want to grasp all I learn.

The more I meet with Joe, the more I realize the depth of his knowledge.  He is a GENIUS! He's teaching me how to hear music differently, and I'll admit it's hard.  It's like learning a new language, or trying to see a new color.  When we play a song, he'll say something like "I don't like the way that cymbal crashed" and where I am used to listening to a song as a whole, or paying attention to the vocal quality and chord progression, not hearing what he does, he can go in with a microscope and make each aspect of a song sound sublime.

It was fun learning how to hook things up to the patch bay and coil wires correctly.  We got to learn the art of routing signal as we used all sorts of hardware to alter our sound.  I always love the hands on stuff, it's so fascinating, but what I'm excited to learn is his mastery of engineering a song to perfection.  He said he wants to groom me to be the one who does the drums and vocals for his songs, and I am stoked!
