Lesson #: 6
David and I covered a very wide assortment of topics tonight.
We did focus a lot on PlugIns and Auxiliary sends in ProTools. As I have been reading my text, I have been trying to visualize these two items in relation to what I have seen in the studio but I have been having some trouble. We went through a detailed session about ProTools and I learned that a Plug-In within Protools is basically an effect (i.e. delay, distortion, etc.) that is applied to a track. These Plug-Ins are not applied directly to the track. The track information is sent (via Auxilliary Send) to a separate track where the effect is then applied. I am very anxious to practice using what I learned in this session as it feels a little awkward to explain without having applied it yet. Fortunately, what I am seeing on the screen now makes a whole lot more sense.
In addition to our ProTools discussion, we also touched on PreAmps for a while. We are going to cover this in much more depth in a later session, but I did learn quite a bit in this short amount of time. Our studio uses multiple PreAmps. One of the PreAmps is the Focusrite ISA Two which is a solid state preamp with 2 Channels. In our discussion of preamps, we covered a model that I can keep an eye out for as I build my setup at home: The Harman DBX 286A. According to David this is a great place for me to start - we were able to find some on Ebay at extremely reasonable prices so I think I am going to jump on this one!
As always, I walked away from this session ready to learn more and excited for the next session. I still feel like I have a lot to learn, but the pieces of the puzzle are starting to come together.
