Lesson #: 9
Today we discussed an assortment of different topics. My reading focused on a very basic introduction and overview of Pro Tools including some keyboard shortcuts and a brief history of the software. David and I focused our attention on setting up and maintaining a system for Pro Tools tracking.
Having a Pro Tools ready hard-drive is very important and there are many different models available. A 7200 RPM hard-drive with 1-2 terabytes of data will be ideal for my setup - depending on the bit-depth and sample rate that a song is tracked in (as well as how many tracks are being recorded) 1 minute of music can suck up a ton of space on a hard drive. Here is a link to the model I am going to pick up:
One added bonus of this product is it is ultra quiet - I don't want a bunch of added noise from a fan in my home studio.
We also discussed some issues I have ben having with tracks I have recorded at home on my own. While I am waiting for Pro Tools to arrive, I have been using the version of Garageband that came with my computer to do some basic tracking with my Presonus Audiobox. I have found that I can hear lots of little snaps, crackles, and pops (think Rice Krispies!) in the background on some of my tracks. There are a variety of things that could be causing this issue. In particular - I learned that there are a lot of settings I need to change in my computer so that it is set up to record properly. For example - I need to make sure my computer is set to never go into sleep mode (as long as I am recording). Having functions like this running can create the little noises I am hearing. I also need to check my components and will be upgrading some of my cables as a few are cheap and are likely creating some interference.
While waiting for my interface and Pro Tools I am going to continue working on my recordings in Garageband while practicing with mic placement. Looking forward to the next session!
