Motor Studios with Zack Posted on 2014-04-24 by Nigel Van Buskirk

My second meeting with Zack went much better than the previous one! For one, I had all my chapter quizzes ready to hand in. Secondly, I got to see the second studio I will be going to in these coming months. I'll be honest, the outside of Motor Studios looked a little rugged. As soon as I stepped in I realized I shouldn't judge a book by its cover! It looked incredible top to bottom and I'm stoked I'll be coming here frequently.

The session with Zack started by going over the two chapter quizzes I turned in. After that we got into the basics of chapter three. We discussed how sample rates and bit depth affect the quality of a recording, the different types of audio files, and how the Nyquist Theorem works. I was pretty confused about the Nyquist Theorem until I read more about it. Now I understand that the sample rate has to be double what the highest frequency recorded is to accurately capture all the frequencies.

Zack let me know that he had an appointment right after our meeting with an electronic producer. However, since he only needed help setting a few things up, he asked his other apprentice Travis to stick around and set up for him. I really wanted to stay but I completely understand why I didn't. I would've just been a fly on the wall anyways. Hopefully my next meeting with him will involve a sit-in-and-watch type session with a client!
