Sound and Hearing Posted on 2016-04-06 by Grayson Carpenter

I've never been satisfied with just knowing that something happens without knowing why. I guess I never grew passed that "Why" phase from being a child. I've always had to know more. This chapter went beyond just explaining concepts. It brought it to a level that was completely tangible. From the videos to the sound bytes, and even the in-depth explanations, everything brought an understanding to the theory and science of sound that I had only received in bits and pieces before. Knowing the process my body undergoes when receiving sound and transfering that information to my brain to interpret has changed the way I think about music and mixing on every level(including knowing how to save my ears by keeping music around 90 dB :)).

In the studio this week my mentor Matt and I patched in a new snake and redid some routing. Matt took me around the studio and showed me how the sessions are set up and routed and showed me some of the artists and projects going on at The Garage. I also assisted setting up and miking a drum kit. Matt likes to use different mic techniques than what I'm used to so it was cool to see a different approach to miking and ideas on the subject. I was drooling over the AKG 414(lusting is more like it). I'm excited to sit in on some upcoming sessions.
