This past week In the studio my teacher wanted me to go over mastering with him.  This is the second time we’ve mastered together but this time he took one of my mixes and showed me what hardware and what plugins he used to master.  I was talking to him about how I was trying to master at home using waves L2, a EQ, and and Multi band compressor.  He told my how mastering is really meant to be done fulling on your computer.   The first thing he had on his chain was a Summit compressor,  a Manley varimu compressors, and last his avalon.  The plugins he used was izotope ozone, a L2, and lastly a dorrough meter.  From the times I sat down with him it seems like mastering is its own artf orm, each thing in the chain can be tweaked in its own way and affect the end product of the sound.  Another thing I learned was how little tweaks from listening to your master in comparing to other songs can affect your over all product.  I still havent got a chance to do a true master but next time I hope I get to try using the hardware and see how those compressors affect the song.
